Defense Verdict and Successful Counter-Claim in Civil Rights Case

by Brian Augenthaler

Mark Bucklin recently obtained a defense and counter-claim verdict in favor of three City of Edmonds police officers. The police contacted the plaintiff after they observed him punching a man following the Taste of Edmonds food festival. The plaintiff refused to cooperate with the officers and hurled racial epithets in their direction. The officers eventually brought the plaintiff under control using a takedown maneuver, and he continued his assaultive behavior toward medical responders. The plaintiff filed a lawsuit in federal court against the police officers, alleging excessive force. The jury found in the officers’ favor on all claims and also found the plaintiff filed the lawsuit maliciously. Good work, Mark!
